Why does no one buy the red cars?

Main Post:

Seems like in used cars the red ones are always cheaper.. any reason why other than colour choice .. because I don’t want the red one either.. but it’s always cheaper!

Top Comment: cars are appliances to most people, thats why your toaster is probably silver or black too

How true is it that red cars get pulled over more often than other color cars?

Main Post: How true is it that red cars get pulled over more often than other color cars?

Top Comment: White cars actually are first in getting pulled over, despite not being flashy. Red comes in 2nd, but it probably has more to do with the types of cars that come in red, and the owners that would choose red on their cars.

Anyone ever buy a red car and regret it?

Main Post:

Current car is silver and I really want a red car. Second choice would be white. Red stands out these days. Is that a bad thing? Is it neither good nor bad?

Top Comment: Went into a dealer looking for a black car, walked out with a red one. Loved it. Had lots of comments on how nice it looked. I had it washed one day and had tire dressing on. Bright sunny day, car was shining everywhere. I rolled past a couple of kids, one of them stopped dead in his tracks and said "WHOA! Nice car!". Made me feel pretty cool. 10/10. Would recommend

Is it really worth getting a RED car?

Main Post:

I really think red cars look dope, and on top of that I don't ever see anyone I'm friends/work with have a red car. I'm thinking about buying my first new car and I want it to be the color I want, but I've heard so many disadvantages to having a red car (higher insurance rates, more expensive to repair, more likely to get a speeding ticket, etc.)

Are these things true? Is it really not worth it to get a red car?

Top Comment: Statistically red cars do tend to get more tickets. That said, it's not exactly something worth losing sleep over. They're gonna be pulling over whoever they see breaking the law. Best thing to do is to make sure it's not you regardless, no matter what color car you drive

Where are all the red cars?

Main Post:

In the 00’s almost everyone had a red car but now you hardly see red cars or different colour cars. Most cars are silver/grey, black or white

Top Comment: OP marked this as the best answer , given by u/eggbean . It's down to cost. Car paint manufacturers use these days are water-based acrylic polyurethane enamel, with no heavy metals and solvents - environmentally friendly, etc. It's much more expensive to use colourful pigments for these paints compared to older lacquer paints, so I they make most of the cars in white, greys and blacks. Brighter colours are sometimes available as expensive options and I've noticed that these are generally only ordered or manufactured on new models during the first three or four years that it's being made. Red paint in particular fades after lead stopped being used in the late '70s or early '80s. What is this?

Is my friend right, is a red color car a bad idea?

Main Post:

My friend told me they would never buy another red car again because she got into a couple of small accidents and would get stopped by police more often than when they had other color cars. Have ya'll noticed this as well? Does a red car make you more noticeable and more prone to stops and/or accidents? Does a color really have that much of an influence?

Top Comment: Red is in second place for getting pulled over, after white, so it's possible you'd get pulled over more. Probably more important is the type of car. I think a silver Ferrari has more chance of being pulled over than a red minivan.

I never thought I would ever purposefully buy a red car in my life but after my most recent purchase, I wouldn’t have it any other way

Why do Red Cars look terrible, yet I love red?

Main Post:

I love red, everything I own is red. But for some reason Red cars look terrible. I can't describe why, but the metal just looks off. I prefer a more dark red, but both light and dark red cars look awful.

Top Comment: I think my disdain dates back to when red, white and sometimes black were the cheapest paints when ordering a car, so cheap folks who bought cheap cars picked them. Also the reds were always bad at handling sunlight and broke down, making them even uglier. Hence i associate red cars with the type of cars that cheap people drive, so usually family cars and boring city cars for the elderly.... (And Ferraris, but they're different) Until like 2010 I think white cars had the same vibe, until they started trending with a futuristic look.

eli5 "You're more likely to be in an accident in a red car"

Main Post:

I heard this statement and it confused me. The explanation was more red cars have accidents than other cars. But surely that doesn't translate to "I personally am more likely to have an accident if I drive a red car than a blue car today"? Assuming there's nothing inherently about red cars that makes them more likely to crash. I'm struggling with the maths theory behind it.

Edit to clarify my question: does the statistic that "red cars have more accidents" translate to the statement that "I, personally, all other things being equal, am more likely to have an accident if I drive a red car than a blue one"?

Top Comment: It would be great to hear from an insurance person, but according to the person who presented to my university class a decade ago, it's about the person who chooses to drive a red vehicle. The way he explained it, there is a correlation between choosing to drive a red vehicle and accidents. So, their insurance is higher. The general idea is that people driving red cars drive faster and are more reckless. But it's all about the person who chooses red, not the vehicle color itself resulting in more accidents. Downside is being a person who drives a red vehicle because it's easier to find with the bright and less common color. Edit: see comment for actual knowledgeable person below, vehicle color isn't factored into price of insurance.

What does car colour say about a customer?

Main Post:

Hello everyone! Long time non-salesman lurker. I thought I’d post a more open topic because last time someone did it was interesting to learn what you guys think!

I’ve been thinking about car colours recently and I was wondering what a colour request meant to you as a salesman? Do certain types of people request specific colours? Have you noticed any similarities between people who don’t care about colour and people who do? Do some people go from red car to red car to red car? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on customers and colours!

Top Comment: Nothing since the only options nowadays are white, red, black, silver, and 18 shades of gray.
